Historic Leather Tannery Partners with Bolt Threads to Embrace Mushroom Leather Innovation
In a groundbreaking move, Heller-Leder, a world-renowned leather tannery with a century-long history, has announced its first-ever venture into alternative leather production through a partnership with Bolt Threads, the company behind the innovative Mylo mushroom leather. Known for its work with high-profile clients like Porsche and Rolf Benz, Heller-Leder’s collaboration with Bolt Threads marks a significant shift in the industry, as the tannery explores materials beyond traditional leather for the first time.
Bolt Threads reports that Heller-Leder’s decision to work with Mylo demonstrates the material’s high quality, functionality, and durability—attributes the company claims are on par with conventional leather. This partnership comes as Bolt Threads prepares to ramp up production of Mylo, aiming for its first commercial launches next year in collaboration with luxury and sports brands Stella McCartney, lululemon, and adidas.
Recently, Mylo has been making waves in the fashion industry. Earlier this month, Stella McCartney showcased a handbag made from Mylo at Paris Fashion Week, following the brand’s earlier creations of garments using the same material. Lululemon has also introduced yoga accessories crafted from Mylo, while adidas announced its development of mushroom leather footwear earlier this year.
Notably, Mylo was recently certified as a vegan material by the Eurofins Vegan Verification Programme, solidifying its position as a leading sustainable alternative in the fashion world.
