Von Holzhausen Introduces LiquidPlant™: The First 100% Plant-Based Topcoat for Alternative Leather
Sustainable materials innovator von Holzhausen has unveiled LiquidPlant™, a groundbreaking 100% plant-based and plastic-free topcoat designed to replace traditional petroleum-based polyurethane finishes. After 2.5 years of development, LiquidPlant emerges as a pioneering solution capable of replacing plastic topcoats across various materials, including traditional and synthetic leathers, paper, wood, plastic, and fabric.
Addressing a Global Challenge
The leather industry, both animal and synthetic, has long relied on plastic topcoats to provide a durable, long-lasting finish. However, these petroleum-based coatings contribute significantly to environmental pollution, taking centuries to decompose and releasing harmful microplastics. Representing a $1 trillion global market, these coatings pose a substantial ecological challenge.
Von Holzhausen’s LiquidPlant, crafted from corn sugar, castor oil, and flaxseed oil, offers a fully plant-based alternative. The innovative product is composed of two layers: a high-quality topcoat and a base layer. It can be used independently or paired with the newly launched Terra Backing material, creating a fully sustainable option.
A Step Towards Circular Innovation
The combination of LiquidPlant and Terra Backing is described by von Holzhausen as a “circular innovation,” poised to revolutionize not just the leather industry but a range of material sectors. This development reflects the brand’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Founded by former automotive designer Vicki von Holzhausen, the company has developed a portfolio of cutting-edge, animal- and plastic-free materials, including Banbū Leather made from bamboo, Technik-Leather, and Struktur Leather from recycled consumer plastics.
In 2022, von Holzhausen partnered with Tesla tune-up specialist Unplugged Performance to upgrade Tesla’s Plaid S car interiors using Banbū Leather, highlighting the versatility and appeal of its sustainable materials.
